Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) like Booking.com and Airbnb are primary targets for cybercriminals. By creating pixel-perfect replicas of these sites, attackers trick guests into 'confirming' their reservations by making direct bank transfers. As a hotelier, if your guests are defrauded through a site mimicking your listing on these platforms, your brand reputation suffers the most.
Warning Signs of a Fake OTA Site
- Unusual URLs: Always check the address bar. A fake site might use `booking-confirmation-hotel.com` instead of the official `booking.com` domain.
- Pressure Tactics: Fake sites often display 'Only 1 room left' or 'Offer expires in 5 minutes' more aggressively than legitimate platforms to prevent the user from checking the URL.
- Payment Methods: If a site asks for payment via Western Union, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency instead of the standard secure credit card gateway, it is a scam.
- Broken Links: Often, the homepage of a fake site looks perfect, but the 'About Us' or 'Terms of Service' links at the bottom are broken or lead back to the homepage.
How to Protect Your Guests
Encourage your guests to use the official apps of these platforms or to verify the booking directly via your official hotel website. If you find a fake listing, follow the takedown process immediately.
